Make progress everyday with physical therapy tips from the Beyond Blindness team of experts.

These at-home exercises can be done inside and out, keeping your kids in motion and practicing skills for their everyday lives. From incorporating songs and games to using everyday objects like curbs and chairs, these strategies are fun for kids and easy for parents and caregivers.

  1. Sit to Stands

From your lap or from a chair, have your child stand up to retrieve a toy before sitting down again.

  1. Squats

Ask your child to pick something off the floor and hand it to you.

  1. Movement Songs

Get your child to move their body by dancing to their favorite songs.

  1. Ball Skills

Work on catching, throwing overhead, and rolling a ball.

  1. Walking or Running

Encourage your child to walk or run on different terrains, such as grass, sand, or gravel, and help them explore the different textures.

  1. Jumping

Use a trampoline, hopscotch, or a jump rope to help your child practice jumping with both feet or alternating feet.

  1. Kicking

Play soccer or kickball with your child and help them practice kicking with different parts of their foot, such as the instep, the toe, or the side.

  1. Practice with a Curb

Have your child step up a curb, then practice jumping down. You can also use a curb to help your child practice walking on a narrow surface, standing on one foot, or walking heel-to-toe.

  1. Climbing

Find a playground, a park, or a hill that has climbing equipment or structures. Help your child climb up and down safely and challenge them to try different levels of difficulty.

  1. Make it a Game

Verbal games like Simon Says or Red Light Green Light get children moving and can give them more practice on targeted skills.
